According to relevant sources, EU Trade Commissioner Sevkovic will meet with US Trade Representative Greer during the ASEAN Ministerial Summit in Kuala Lumpur this week, aiming to restart the stalled negotiations on steel and aluminum export tariffs.
Since the emergence of related tariff issues, negotiations between the two sides have made difficult progress. Sevkovic stated that the European Commission has taken active action to propose the cancellation or significant reduction of export tariffs on steel and aluminum, but has not yet received a response from the United States regarding this proposal. Sefkovic further pointed out that from the current situation, the most reasonable step is to implement tariff quotas, that is, to set a certain quota range, with low tariffs or no tariffs levied within the quota, in order to balance the interests of both sides.
When asked by the media about related issues, US Trade Representative Greer stated that the matter of metal tariffs is the responsibility of the US Department of Commerce. As of now, neither the US Trade Representative nor the US Department of Commerce has immediately responded to the meeting and tariff negotiations.
The meeting between EU and US trade representatives to restart negotiations on steel and aluminum export tariffs has attracted international attention. As important industrial raw materials, the trade policies of steel and aluminum not only affect the economic development of Europe and America, but also have a profound impact on the supply and demand relationship, price fluctuations, and other aspects of the global steel and aluminum market. The international community expects both sides to make positive progress in this meeting and find a solution that can safeguard the industrial interests of both sides and promote the stable development of global trade. The specific developments regarding this negotiation will continue to attract attention from all parties.
