Recently, the International Aluminum Institute (IAI) released global alumina production data for March 2025, attracting significant industry attention. The data shows that global alumina production reached 12.921 million tons in March, with a daily average output of 416,800 tons, a month-on-month increase of 9.8%, demonstrating strong momentum in industry production.
In terms of regional distribution, China dominates global alumina production. In March 2025, China’s estimated alumina production was 7.828 million tons, accounting for approximately 60.6% of the global total. This is mainly attributed to a complete domestic aluminum industry supply chain, sustained market demand growth, and continuous advancements in production technology. Regions such as Shanxi and Henan, with abundant bauxite resources and mature smelting technologies, provide a solid foundation for production growth.
Oceania followed with a production volume of 1.451 million tons, ranking second. Blessed with rich bauxite reserves, it is home to multiple large-scale alumina production bases that have long provided stable supplies to global markets. Production in Africa and Asia (excluding China) reached 1.149 million tons. Although the proportion is relatively small, some countries are actively developing bauxite resources based on their own advantages, leading to a gradual increase in output.
In terms of production composition, chemical alumina output reached 719,000 tons, up from 684,000 tons the previous month, while metallurgical alumina output stood at 12.162 million tons, higher than 11.086 million tons in February. This indicates that with the development of the aluminum processing industry—particularly the rising demand for aluminum in automotive, construction, and aerospace sectors—demand for metallurgical alumina remains strong, driving steady production growth.
