Novelis Unveils World’s First 100% Recycled Automotive Aluminum Coil to Boost Circular Economy

Novelis, a global leader in aluminum processing, has announced the successful production of the world’s first aluminum coil made entirely from end-of-life vehicle (ELV) aluminum. Meeting the stringent quality standards for automotive body outer panels, this achievement marks a breakthrough in sustainable manufacturing for the automotive industry.

This innovative coil is the result of collaboration between Novelis and Thyssenkrupp Materials Services. Through their “Automotive Circular Platform” (ACP), the two companies efficiently recycle and precisely process aluminum from vehicles, transforming what would have been waste into high-quality automotive manufacturing materials. Currently, 85% of the automotive aluminum supplied by Novelis already contains recycled content, and the launch of this 100% recycled coil signifies a technological leap in material circularity.

Using recycled aluminum delivers significant environmental benefits: reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption by approximately 95% compared to traditional primary aluminum production, while minimizing the industry’s reliance on virgin aluminum resources. Novelis plans to expand its global recycling capabilities and strengthen partnerships with automakers and supply chain stakeholders to promote the adoption of recycled aluminum in vehicle manufacturing, helping customers increase the proportion of recycled materials and accelerating the automotive industry’s transition to a circular economy.

This breakthrough not only demonstrates the innovative potential of materials science but also proves to the industry that sustainable manufacturing and high-performance products are not mutually exclusive. With the promotion of technologies by companies like Novelis, the automotive sector is steadily advancing toward a “zero-waste” green future.
