U.S. primary aluminum production fell in 2024, while recycled aluminum production rose

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. primary aluminum production fell by 9.92% year-on-year in 2024 to 675,600 tons (750,000 tons in 2023), while recycled aluminum production increased by 4.83% year-on-year to 3.47 million tons (3.31 million tons in 2023).

On a monthly basis, primary aluminum production fluctuated between 52,000 and 57,000 tons, peaking at 63,000 tons in January; recycled aluminum production ranged from 292,000 to 299,000 tons, hitting an annual high of 302,000 tons in March. The annual production trend showed a “high first half, low second half”: primary aluminum production reached 339,000 tons in the first half of the year, dropping to 336,600 tons in the second half, mainly due to a surge in electricity costs—the U.S. industrial electricity price rose to 7.95 cents per kilowatt-hour in March 2024 (7.82 cents per kilowatt-hour in February), increasing the production costs of energy-intensive primary aluminum. Recycled aluminum saw 1.763 million tons of recycling in the first half of the year, slightly decreasing to 1.71 million tons in the second half, maintaining growth throughout the year.

In terms of daily average production, primary aluminum production in 2024 was 1,850 tons per day, a 10% decline from 2023 and a 13% decline from 2022, highlighting the continuous contraction of U.S. primary aluminum capacity, while recycled aluminum maintained growth resilience due to cost advantages and the promotion of a circular economy.
