Global Primary Aluminum Saw a Modest Surplus of 68,900 Tons in February 2026

According to the latest report from the World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS), global primary aluminum production reached 6.1771 million metric tons in February 2026, while consumption stood at 6.1081 million metric tons, resulting in a small surplus of 68,900 tons. For the first two months of 2026 combined, total production was 12.3577 million metric tons against consumption of 12.3485 million metric tons, a cumulative surplus of just 9,200 tons.

In addition, WBMS data shows that global bauxite production in February 2026 was 37.9736 million metric tons, alumina production reached 13.2173 million metric tons, and secondary (recycled) aluminum output was 2.2801 million metric tons. For January~February 2026, total bauxite production was 75.9472 million metric tons, alumina output 26.4345 million metric tons, and recycled aluminum production 4.5603 million metric tons.

What This Supply Surplus Really Means for Buyers

At first glance, a global surplus might suggest that aluminum is plentiful and prices are stable. However, the numbers tell a different story. The surplus of only 68,900 tons in February is extremely thin by historical standards, equivalent to less than half a day of global demand. More importantly, this small surplus masks severe regional imbalances. As highlighted in recent industry reports, visible aluminum inventories have fallen to less than nine days of consumption, and geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East have removed over one million tons of annual supply. Meanwhile, China’s aluminum exports grew 6.5% year-on-year in Q1 2026, indicating strong demand for semi finished products.

Therefore, while the headline “global surplus” sounds reassuring, the reality is that the aluminum market remains tight, and buyers need a reliable, responsive supplier.
