In April, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles exceeded 60% for the first time, and the doubling of aluminum consumption per vehicle ignited the demand for electrolytic aluminum

In April 2026, China’s new energy vehicle industry reached a milestone moment, with the penetration rate breaking through the 60% mark for the first time, setting a new historical high; With the trend of electrification and lightweighting, the average aluminum consumption per vehicle for new energy vehicles has significantly increased, becoming the most certain core line for the growth of electrolytic aluminum demand. Coupled with the explosive growth of exports, the demand growth space in the aluminum market has been further opened up.

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the retail penetration rate of new energy passenger vehicles in China reached 61.4% in April, breaking through 60% for the first time. This means that for every 10 passenger vehicles sold, 6 are new energy models, marking the official entry of the Chinese car market into the dominant stage of new energy. In terms of production, the output of new energy vehicles reached 1.296 million units in April, maintaining steady growth year-on-year; The export performance was even more impressive, with 430,000 new energy vehicles exported in the month, a significant increase of 1.1 times year-on-year. In the first four months, a total of 1.384 million vehicles were exported, a year-on-year increase of 1.2 times. Overseas markets have become an important growth pole for domestic new energy vehicle sales.

At the same time as the acceleration of electrification transformation, the demand for aluminum materials continues to rise due to the lightweighting of automobiles. Data shows that the average aluminum consumption per vehicle for new energy vehicles has increased to about 280 kilograms, while the aluminum consumption per vehicle for traditional fuel vehicles is only 120~150 kilograms. The aluminum consumption of new energy vehicles is almost double that of fuel vehicles. Aluminum, with its advantages of lightweight and high strength, is widely used in core components such as battery pack shells, body structural components, wheel hubs, and thermal management systems of new energy vehicles. It is a key material for improving vehicle range and reducing energy consumption.

From the perspective of demand increment, aluminum for new energy vehicles has become the most certain main line for the growth of electrolytic aluminum demand. Industry calculations show that for every 1 percentage point increase in the penetration rate of new energy vehicles, the corresponding annual increase in aluminum consumption is about 80000 to 100,000 tons. The current penetration rate has exceeded 60%, coupled with the increase in aluminum consumption per vehicle and high export growth, which will continue to provide strong support for the demand for electrolytic aluminum. With the continuous increase in the proportion of mid to high end new energy vehicle models, the strength of aluminum used in bicycles is expected to further increase, and the space for aluminum increment in the future will continue to expand.

Industry insiders analyze that the high prosperity of the domestic new energy vehicle industry continues, with a steady increase in penetration rate and a clear trend of sustained export volume, which will continue to drive the growth of aluminum demand for automobiles. Against the backdrop of a tight global supply and demand pattern for electrolytic aluminum, the deterministic growth in demand for aluminum for new energy vehicles will provide solid support for aluminum prices and become the core driving force for the long term improvement of the aluminum market. We need to continue to pay attention to the production, sales, and export data of new energy vehicles, as well as the sustained demand for aluminum materials driven by the advancement of automotive lightweight technology.
